A collection of sounds, recorded at the fast-food parking lot. An uncommonly-warm day in the great north, the window was partway down so there is an outdoor ambient background. Straw is unwrapped and stuffed through the plastic lid of a drink, making its characteristic shriek. Remembering when as kids, four of us would sit around a table before the age of masking, and work the straws in the lids to generate a racket, i did that. This could be used as a cartoon-ish engine start failure, sounds like an old fiat. Then the crunching of a paper bag as a decadent burger is extracted.

One of my favorite summer and late-summer sounds. The night-hawk is the star of this recording. This recording was made around 9pm at night in mid-august and, even though i never could see this nighthawk, his calls pierced through the night-sky to let me know he was up there, somewhere, orbiting on the prowl for mosquitos and other insects. I have always loved this sound ever since i was a kid and going to sleep at night i felt comforted knowing that, like some circling fighter jet, the nighthawks would be on the job, plowing down the population of mosquitos, while i slept all night. Recording actually made in the parking lot of a major midwest university around 9pm at night on august 19th, 2014. Equipment: marantz pmd661 modified by oade brothers electronics, beyerdynamic me58 microphone. My record volume was 7.

On the other side of a line of trees was the launch pad for the towns fire work show. The mic is angled at the sky. Along with the big round booms and flat smacky booms you can also make out the swish as rockets swirl through the air. In between booms, whistles and fizzles you you can also hear the sound of the debris from the cardboard shells falling around me. Sometimes they were on fire, though you can't hear that quality in the audio. It's good for fireworks and is pretty easy to eq for more of a distant quality. I find it's more fun using it to sweeten weapons. The full recording is 29 minutes.
